Two of Swords

The "Twos" in the Tarot Deck generally concern aspects of duality - such as communication, dialogue, relationships, and the balancing of opposites.

The Two of Swords combines the concepts of communication and conflict - possibly conflict between two individuals, or two different points of view. It also incorporates the idea of being blocked (or blocking oneself from progress); of an unsatisfactory stalemate.

Another related asopect of this card is procrastination. Is the seeker putting-off a matter that would be better tackled ?
Where procrastination is at the core of the situation it may be because the seeker is unable to discern his/her real issues, or generate possible ways of resolving them.

Keywords summarising the possible meanings of this card include:

  • Avoiding Communication
  • Avoiding seeing a situation as it is
  • Dangerous situation
  • Possible problems ahead
  • Precarious balance
  • Uncertainty.

Remember that all of the Swords cards in the Tarot Deck have some energies in common. These include, for example, the overall association of the suit of Swords with academic or philosophical thought, intellectual pursuits, truth, and clarity. For further information, also read about the Suit of Swords in general.

Some texts include meanings for "reversed cards", which apply when the cards are shuffled in both order and orientation. This doubles the number of possible "cards" in the deck from 78 to 156. (In terms of the probabilities of obtaining results by chance alone, it is not a simple doubling as once a card has been drawn it cannot be selected again in the opposite orientation in the same reading.)
