The historic city of Oxford is located in the south of
England and also in the south of its county, Oxfordshire.
It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the
United Kingdom. Some reports list it as the second most popular tourist destination in the UK - after London, obviously.
Oxford is within easy reach of London, typical journey time
being approx. one hour (sometimes less by train but
longer by coach).
Oxford is probably most famous for its university and
its architecture - the two being closely related as most
of the most beautiful buildings in the city belong to some
part of the university or its colleges. Historically, Oxford
and its university have been of such national importance
that many important events occurred here and famous people
studied and/or taught, or even just stayed here. Its not
just colleges that boast of famous former students, even
the pubs can't resist ...
